April 26th in Tokyo. The rain from the previous week had vanished like a dream, and the day was blessed with gentle spring sunlight and a breeze that rustled the fresh greenery.<\/p>

Leaving the hustle and bustle of the city behind, we made our way to Jozai-ji, a temple nestled in Setagaya. This visit was part of our “Outing”\u2014a bimonthly ritual where we step away from our daily production work to sharpen our sensibilities. As part of this experience, we participated in a yoga session held within the solemn atmosphere of the temple’s main hall.<\/p>

As we passed through the dignified Sanmon gate, we were struck by a crisp, solemn atmosphere that marked the entrance to a sacred realm.<\/p>

Upon entering the main hall, we found ourselves in a magnificent space adorned with brilliant, intricate decorations. Even the slightest sound echoing under the high ceiling felt sacred, making the bustle of daily life feel miles away. Even before the yoga began, we were already captivated by this extraordinary silence.<\/p>

At 4:00 PM, amidst the gentle evening air, our yoga session began quietly with a warm greeting from our instructor. As I deepened my breathing, my mind gradually filled with a profound stillness, much like the state of Zazen meditation.<\/p>

Under the watchful eye of the main deity, I felt a pleasant tension\u2014as if being observed by the divine\u2014yet it was never stiff; rather, it was a sense of being enveloped in great security. With every breath, the tension that had unknowingly stiffened my body during our daily creative work began to release. The chirping of birds outside and the flickering candle flames felt more vivid than ever.<\/p>

In this sense of liberation, where even the air against my skin felt fresh, I truly grasped the “slow flow of time” that we so often forget. Facing my own breath and my own self, I worked to harmonize my breathing. By facing the Buddha before me, I felt my spirit grow calm within this extraordinary space.<\/p>

The monk\u2019s account of his experience in the Nichiren-shu Dai-aragyo<\/em>\u2014known as one of the world’s three major ascetic practices\u2014was particularly striking. It is a hundred-day period of training that begins in the biting cold of November. He described a life of extremes: ritual water purifications twice a day and only two meals of rice gruel and miso soup daily.<\/p>

Listening to his story allowed me to quietly reflect on how mild my own daily fatigues and limitations truly are. At the same time, I felt a connection between the way the mind and body are sharpened in such a restricted environment and the moments I had just spent facing my own breath; that time took on an even deeper meaning.<\/p>

The stillness found within such harsh training and the peaceful tranquility I had just experienced felt connected by a single thread. It made me realize that even in our ordinary daily lives, there is always a “space” or “margin” where we can face ourselves in the same way.<\/p>
